The most common problem with phrasal verbs is the question of whether or not the phrasal verb can be separated. Some verbs can be separated, that is, an object can be inserted between the verb and the particle. For example, "I turned off the light" = "I turned the light off." In most of these cases, the verb and particle must be separated when the object is a pronoun. For example, "I turned it off" is correct, but "I turned off it" is incorrect. Other phrasal verbs, however, cannot be separated. For example, the phrasal verb "come across": "I came across an interesting book yesterday." and "I came across it yesterday." A Failure of Sisterhood

Where are America's feminists? Why haven't they come forward to denounce Bill Clinton for his two-timing ways? For his cavalier disregard for women, even his own wife? For the way he uses women to satisfy his own desires? And most especially, why haven't they come forward to comfort and guide Monica Lewinsky, the most vulnerable and perhaps the most victimized person in this whole messy drama?

Lewinsky, at 25, is young enough to be his daughter. At the time of the affair, she was even younger, just 21, and a junior employee at the White House. Impressionable, star-struck, and hungry for recognition from a powerful man whom she admired, she was an easy mark for Clinton's sexual advances. Clearly, Clinton took advantage of her to satisfy his own desires for sexual thrills and adoration. And just as clearly, Clinton deceived his wife and counted on her to stick by his side even if the truth were to be revealed. In other words, Clinton used both women, one for sex and adoration, the other for her unflagging devotion and commitment.

But instead of Clinton being criticized for his behavior, Lewinsky is criticized for hers. She has been the butt of jokes and jeers for months. It's a classic case of "blame the other woman, not the man." It's the kind of thing that feminists denounced as they proclaimed sisterhood. But apparently, the standards are different for the President of the United States. Not one feminist leader has criticized Clinton for his behavior.

This behavior, it should be noted, would result in dismissal or demotion if it had been committed by anyone other than the President of the United States. As a captain in the U.S. Army pointed out just hours after Clinton's televised confession to the nation, if a soldier such as himself committed adultery (as Clinton has) or fraternized with a junior colleague (as Clinton has), he would be court-martialed and dismissed. This captain, a young man, then asked: As Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, shouldn't Clinton be subject to the same rules?

America's feminists should take a hint from this young captain. Why not call for Clinton's resignation? Why not proclaim that American women will no longer endure being used and abused by men, not even by the President? And then why not reach out a helping hand to a young, misguided woman who needs to learn strength, self-confidence and the difference between recognition and a sexual come-on.

American culture has been shaped by its history of conquest and expansion across the American continent, as well as by its industrial and technological development. Thus, American culture can be characterized as aggressive, individualistic and oriented toward profit and pleasure.

The key difference between Korean and American cultures can be found in their different histories. Korea has a 5,000-year history, while American history is barely 200 years (300 years if you count the pre-American Revolution years). Some of the differences include the individualistic orientation of Americans versus the familial/community orientation of Koreans, and in the American emphasis on pleasure and leisure versus the Korean emphasis on hard work. Of course, these differences are general, and do not mean that all Americans are like that, or that all Koreans are like that.

For a readable history of the United States, try "A People's History of the United States," by Howard Zinn. The Korean title is "¹Ì±¹ ¹ÎÁß ÀúÇ×»ç". For insights into American culture, try reading some of Noam Chomsky's works on the American media.

There is no shortcut to good translations. Good translations require not only simple language ability in both languages, but also a broad understanding of the material being translated. For example, if the material being translated is about psychology, then this requires a familiarity with psychology in both Korean and English. This is why many professional translators only translate works within their particular field or specialty.

Since your translation work is part of your job, we are assuming that the material to be translated falls within one area of specialization. Thus improving your knowledge in that area will be the most beneficial thing you can do. Try the following steps:

1) Read everything you can find in English regarding that area. In particular, books that give historical background and discuss current issues, and newspaper and magazine articles that relay the latest trends and developments. If the area is economics, for example, books relating to economic history or economic theory might be helpful. Reading magazines such as the Far Eastern Economic Review, Business Week and Forbes would also be helpful. This kind of reading will give you a broad overview and understanding of the field, familiarize you with key concepts and often-used expressions, and give you a basic understanding of the culture of that field.

2) Read everything you can find in Korean regarding that area. This will familiarize you with the phrases and expressions used in that area, the history of that area, and the culture of that area.

3) Practice steps 1 and 2 daily. Together, they will give you the bi-lingual and bi-cultural knowledge of the field that will make good translation possible.

4) You will then find that you know and understand the field in both languages. This is key to good translation.

5) As you translate from one language to the other, keep in the mind two basic principles: a) Do not make literal translations, but instead translate for meaning. A translation should convey the meaning and the mood of the writing. b) The translated work should not feel like a translation, but should read as if it were originally written in Korean.

Keep in mind that the only way to achieve a translation that meets these two basic principles is to be thoroughly familiar in both English and Korean with the field in question. Someone who is familiar with the language of romance novels in both English and Korean can best translate a romance novel; someone who understands economics in both Korean and English can best translate economic writing; someone who is familiar with the way Korean history is written in both English and Korean can best translate an article on Korean history, and so on.

To sum up, a good translator must become an expert not in translation, but an expert, in both languages, in the field that she is translating.

Copyright refers to intellectual property rights, that is, the legal possession of a work such as a book, article, etc. Works that are copyrighted cannot be used without permission. For example, if someone wants to publish part of a copyrighted article, than permission must be obtained. A person who produces a piece of intellectual property -- book, paper, poem, etc. -- automatically has the copyright, even if it has not been formally published. International standards, most recently revised at the Geneva Convention, govern copyrights, but individual countries also have their own copyright laws.

Copyleft is Internet slang, and refers to a different kind of intellectual property right. A copyleft is much looser than a copyright, since a copyleft allows the work to be used without permission as long as the usage meets two conditions:
1) the usage does not generate any kind of monetary or material profit; and
2) the usage does not substantially alter the original work.
And of course, the usage must state who the author/producer of the work is. The concept of a copyleft has been upheld in court, and is currently gaining popularity.

Regarding your second question, the best method depends on what kind of programs you are watching on AFKN.
If you are watching the news, the best method is to first read the Korean papers so that you know what the news events and issues are. Then, as you watch the news in English, you will be able to make educated guesses about what is being said and about the meaning of vocabulary. For faster results, read the English-language papers as well. In this way, you will have read much of the same news that you will hear.
In other words, the key is to prepare yourself with prior knowledge. This will enable you to catch new words and phrases and to understand them.

"Occlusion" is the noun form of the verb "occlude" which means to close, shut or block, or to conceal or hide. "Inclusion" is the noun form of the verb "include" which means to encompass, enfold, or hold within itself.

The confusion between the two words may be due to the fact that whether something is occluded or included, it may be hidden or out of view. But the reason for being out of view is different in each case. For example, if something is occluded, then it is hidden from view because something else is in front of it. But if something is included, then it is hidden from view because it is held within something else.

In addition, "inclusion" can refer either to the thing that is included or to the act of inclusion. The former usage is most common in biology. For example, there may be an inclusion within a cell. Women in Protest

Women were among the first to publicly protest the Suharto regime in Indonesia . Calling themselves the Voice of Concerned Mothers, university lecturers , activists , housewives and others gathered on February 23, 1998, to protest rising violence, inflation and increased social unrest, and to demand economic and political reforms. It was the first time in 32 years that women had taken to the streets in protest. And coming as it did on the first day of a week-long ban on demonstrations and political activity, the women's protest attracted much attention.

Other groups soon followed the women into the streets, and Indonesia's middle class, long complacent and political dormant, arose from its slumber. The protests of the middle class and of university students toppled the Suharto regime. After 32 years in power, Suharto stepped down on May 21.

But many Indonesians complain that although Suharto is gone, his regime remains. Suharto handed power to B.J. Habibie, his protege. The systems of political and economic oppression are still thriving, and Indonesia is still far from the democratic and equitable society that protestors envisioned . In addition, although women were instrumental in the movement for economic and political reforms, equal rights for women do not seem to form a prominent part of the agenda of those calling for reform.
