as soon as ....이하는 직접화법의 문장을 그대로 옮겨 왔는데, said가 과거이기 때문에 시제 일치를 시켜야 바른 문장이 되지 않나요?

said 하고 일치시키는 법은 없습니다.
would가 미래를 나타내므로 finds out이 현제로 쓰여야 합니다.

had better have + p.p. 구문은 과거에 실현되지 않은 일을 나타낼 수 있습니다. 마치 가정법 과거완료처럼 말이죠.
그러면, 현재에 실현되지 않은 일은 어떻게 나타내죠?
had better + 동사원형 으로는 그런 의미를 나타낼 수 없는데...

(2) I wish that you did it.
= I am sorry that you can't do it.
전 (1)을 해석할 때, 단순히 '네가 그것을 하기를 바란다. 하면 좋겠다.'의
뜻으로 해석합니다. 이렇게 해석하면, (2)번의 I wish 와 같은 뜻인 I am
sorry ..의 의미(현재사실과 반대)가 담겨있지 않은데...
그러면, 정말 I'd rather + 절 (가정법 과거시제) = I wish + 절의 공식이
성립하여 (1)번도 I am sorry ...의 뜻을 내포하는지요?

첫째, 현대 영어에 맞는 문법 책 ('뿌리토익영어' (주)천재교육 )을 구입하셔서 문장 구성의 특성에 따라 해석하는 법에 초점을 맞춰서 한 번 읽어 보십시오. 영어를 잘하시기 때문에 짧은 시간 안에 문법을 익히실 겁니다. 주의하실 점은 절대 문법의 용법을 외우려고 하지 마십시오.
둘째, 매일 꾸준하게 영자 신문이나 잡지를 보십시오. 이 방법이 독해력을 기르는데 가장 좋은 방법입니다. 때로는 복잡한 문장 구성 때문에 뜻이 한 번에 잡히지 않을 겁니다. 겁내지 마시고 되돌아 가서 다시 읽으시면 뜻이 조금은 잡힐 겁니다. 주의하실 점은 주어가 뭐고 동사가 뭐고 하는 식의 분석은 금물입니다.

Apparently we misunderstood your question, as there are several "as ..." portions in the sentence.
The "As a captain..." portion of the sentence is a subordinate clause, as is the "if..." clause. The "if...." clause and the "would be ..." clause are connected (in a if-then style, although in this case the "then" is deleted) and the "As a captain..." clause refers to the entire if-then portion of the sentence. Your rewrite of this sentence is impeccably correct.

이 두 개의 구성 방식 중 어느것이 더 보편적인 방법인가요? 또는 사단구성의 글이 외국에서도 보편적인 글의 구성 방식인가요?
사실 이 둘을 분류해내기는 너무 분석적이고 애매한 상황이 한국의 글에서도 많이 발견되지만요.

Your question is a very general one. First, Americans do not use expressions that are equivalent to 삼단구성법 and 사단구성법. They do not learn writing with those kinds of structures. Rather, they are taught that every piece of writing should have an introduction, a main body, and a conclusion. The main body can have as many topics as necessary.
For letters, the general style is to have
1) an introduction, which can consist of a brief greeting, some explanation regarding the reason for the letter, and, if necessary, a brief list of the topics in the main body;
2) the main body, which consists of the bulk of the letter;
3) the conclusion, which usually includes an expression of thanks or best wishes.
But this style can vary depending on the type of letter and also on how well the two correspondents know each other.
Also, it is very important in American business culture for letters to be concise and focused. Short sentences, short paragraphs, and an easy-to-read style are preferred.

When you have grasped the basic prepositions, you might try looking at individual prepositions and their specific usages.
Q 2. As I read English language materials, how can I distinguish between preposition and phrasal verb?
Since many prepositions come after verbs even when the combination is not a phrasal verb, there is no way to accurately distinguish between a preposition and a phrasal verb other than to memorize the phrasal verbs.
