The result of the preliminary graduate school entrance exam came out yesterday, and guess what!
I passed!!!!
Yeah~!

Today, I'm taking the 2nd exam, and this time they are going to exam my Korean ability (involving fluency in Chinese characters), translating skills (English into Korean and vice versa), essay writing skills, and last and most important, an interview with the professors. This interview is not quite the usual process that you might think of. The professors are going to ask my opinion on several topics (national and international affairs) and also ask me to interpret an article of 15 to 20 lines, English into Korean and vice versa. That doesn't sound that easy, eh? There's not much I can do now, it's up to God. I certainly will try my best, but I could use some luck! Wish me luck! Please!

This time, I'd like some help with the following translation.

갑: 자네 금강산 관광 안갈 건가?
을: 아니, 싫네. 만약 내가 북한을 간다면 평양 북쪽에 있는 내 고향부터 가고 싶네. 그런데 자네 이번 달에 금강산에 가면 뭘 사다 줄 건가?
갑: 뭘 살게 있는지 가봐야 알겠지.

A: Won't you go for the Mt. Keumgang tour?
B: No, I won't. But if I went to North Korea, I would like to visit my hometown first. Anyway, what are you going to get me from your trip to Mt. Keumgang this month?
A: I don't have a slightest idea. You'll have to wait and see.

I am not so sure about the first and the last sentences. These looked easy at first, but I found it not so easy to find the right expression. When you are asking about their intention in negative sentences, how should I start the sentence? Also, help me with the last sentence. I really don't have the slightest idea on how to translate that.

그리고..질문은 좀 더 구체적으로 써서 보내라는 ..말씀에.. 한번 더 질문을 드릴께요..^^*~
영문법 내용 중에서 "end focus, end weight" 라는 두 원리가 무엇인가를 좀 더 구체적으로 알고 싶습니다."
일반 문법 책은 찾아봐도 알 수가 없더라 구요.
영문법 강의를 듣고 있는 중에..이 원리에 대해서 구체적으로 알고 싶었습니다.
그리고 음...구체적으로...예제 문제는..
"To make a fool of yourself is pity."라는 문제를 end weight 원리에 따라서 고쳐 써보는 것이랍니다.
더 많은 문제가 있긴 한데....대표적으로 이 문제를 제가 선생님께서 가르쳐주신 대로 해보면..
"It is a pity...이렇게 시작될 것 같은데...
아직도... 위의 두 원리의...'무게와 초점을 문장이나 문단 끝 부분에 둬라'라는 것이..쉽게 이해가 안가서 문장을 어떻게 고칠지 잘 모르겠습니다..

end-focus, end-weight: 무게와 초점을 문장 끝에 둬라

End focus means that more information is put at the end of the sentence. The most common form of end-focus is when the agent (or principal subject of a sentence) is placed right at the end.

Example:
He was killed by a man carrying a gun.

Here, the agent (man) is in end focus. The second half of the sentence is "heavier" semantically than the earlier part, i.e. it carries more information load. This makes the sentence conform to the end-weight principle.

The above sentence also looks like a passive, which it is, and very often, passive constructions do form good examples of end-weight or end-focus.

다음은 보내주신 예문을 end-focus, end-weight 용법을 적용해서 바꿨습니다.

To make a fool of yourself is a pity.
---> It is a pity to make a fool of yourself. (end-focus, end-weight 문장)

I was really surprised yet pleased to receive your reply on the questions I posted yesterday. Your reply with such comprehensive explanations was superb and really helped me. Thank you so much.

As you know, it seems like you absorb every point when you read through explanations, but when you try to imply it to writing you just go completely blank or get really confused. Well, that's exactly what happened to me with the usage of 'subjunctive-mixed tense' (I don't know the exact grammatical term, so..) Let's say we're translating the following into English.
'그가 나를 잘 안다면 그렇게 많은 청중들 앞에서 그런 얘기를 하지 않았을 거야'
Before I had any knowledge about mixed-tense, I did it in the following way.
'If he knew me inside and out, he wouldn't have said something like that in front of such a large audience.'

Does it make any sense? Is it totally wrong, like impossible? I guess, the right way of doing it would be by using subjunctive past perfect, like..
'If he had known me inside and out, he wouldn't have said something like that in front of such a large audience.'

But, I am wondering if this sentence is compatible with the Korean one. Wouldn't there be some discrepancy in meaning between Korean and English sentences? To my understanding, in 'IF' clause, the statement that we're imagining (or opposing) is 'he doesn't know me (in present tense)' rather than 'he didn't know me(in past tense)'. So, as we're imagining current state, shouldn't the tense in 'IF' clause be simple past? Am I struggling too much with Korean? Is this Korean expression unappropriet? Or is it because of the characteristic of the verb 'know'? Then is there better verb to use in this kind of situation?

1. 가정법에서 if절의 시제는 주절보다 앞서거나 같아야 하는 게 원칙이지만 동사의 특성상 예외인 경우가 있습니다. 즉 마음동사(love, feel 등)나 머리동사(know, understand 등)는 과거시제로 쓰였을 경우라도 과거완료 시점까지 포함할 수 있습니다. 아래 문장을 참조하세요.

2. 그가 나를 잘 안다면 그렇게 많은 청중들 앞에서 그런 얘기를 하지 않았을 거야.
1) 구어체 표현: 동사 know의 시제 때문에 우리말의 뜻과 시제에 가까운 표현임
If he knew me inside and out, he wouldn't have said something like that in front of such a large audience. (O)
2) 시제일치 원칙 표현: 문법적으로 엄격히 따지자면 다음 문장처럼 써야 함
If he had known me inside and out, he wouldn't have said something like that in front of such a large audience. (O)

3. The verb tense in the if-clause must precede that of the main clause or be the same as that of the main clause because, logically, whatever happens in the if-clause must precede, or occur simultaneously as, what happens in the main clause.

지금은 한국에 있어요.
뉴질랜드에서 이민생활을 좀 했었는데, 작년에 대학과정(일본어와 management&communication 공부를 했습니다)을 마치고 올해 5월에 졸업식을 한 후에 한국에 들어와서 살고 있어요.
여기서 외국어대학교 통역대학원에 대한 얘기를 접하고는 그 공부가 너무너무 하고싶어서 몇개월간 준비를 해서 얼마 전에 1차 시험을 봤고, 오늘이 벌써 1차 결과 발표가 나는 날이네요. 남들은 몇년씩도 준비하는 시험을 달랑 몇개월 덜렁덜렁 해놓고 붙기를 바라는 거 자체가 무리라는 걸 알기 때문에 별 기대는 안 걸고 있지만도 제 생각에 시험을 잘 본 것 같아서.. 붙으면 좋은 거지요, 뭐..
이민은 고등학교를 마치고 갔었어요. 그래도 중고등학교 합쳐서 6년을 한 영어공분데 한마디도 할 수가 없다는 게 너무나 자존심이 상하더군요. 그때 생각에는 영어는 말인데 무슨 문법이냐 해서 문법은 완전히 제껴두고 말만 그냥 따라 배웠어요. 그래서 간쓸개 다 빼놓고 열심히 따라다니면서 말을 배웠어요. 그래서 대학도 무사히 졸업도 했는데 아직도 너무나 모자라다는걸 느껴요.
영어를 정말 잘했으면 좋겠다는 생각은 아주 어려서부터 가져왔었어요. 남들에 비해 언어에 대한 관심도 높았고 감각도 좀 있는 것 같아요..(아하하.. 자화자찬인가요?)
그리고 한국에 들어왔는데 영문법을 새롭게 보게 되었어요. 고작 몇개월이지만 통대준비를 하면서 제가 쓰는 영어가 얼마나 영문법에 안 맞는 엉터리가 많은지 알게 되었거든요. 점점 더 정확한 영어를 쓰고 싶다는 생각이 들더군요. 그래서 인터넷 사이트를 돌아다니며, 책을 찾아보며 영문법을 공부했어요. 고등학교까지 마쳤지만 영문법은 완전히 뒷전으로 제껴놓고 살았던 터라 문법 용어들도 낯설게 들리고..그래도 고등학교 때 공부하던거랑은 또 다르더라구요. 아예 모르면 액면 그대로 받아들이지만 전 아주 모르는 상태는 아니잖아요, 그러니까 '이럴 땐 어떻게 되지, 이건 왜 안되지' 하는 식의 질문들이 자꾸 생기더라구요. 또 문법에 맞춰 쓰다가 보면 부자연스러워지는 문장들도 있었구요.
그런데 문법책은 책마다 내용이 다르더라구요. 특히 가정법은 그랬어요.그래서 인터넷의 영어클리닉들을 돌아다니면서 질문도 올려보고 했는데 선생님들처럼 팍팍 이해가게 설명해주시는 분들이 안계시더라구요.
프로필만 보고도 '아~ 이분들이시구나' 했어요.
이번에 시작한 김에 영문법을 다시 한번 들여다봐야겠구나 했는데 너무나 근사한 선생님들을 만나서 저는 너무나 기뻐요..
영어말고 다른 얘기를 하자면 전 영화를 무척이나 좋아하구요, 인터넷 뒤지고 돌아다니는 것도 좋아하구요..요즘에 공부한답시고 너무 잘먹어서 불어난 살을 어떻게 처리해야 하나 하는 게 제 가장 큰 고민일 정도로 전 그냥 평범평범~ 이정도면 저에 대한 궁금증이 풀리셨나요? 앞으로도 선생님들의 도움을 많이많이 받아야 할 것 같아요.
'질문-답변' 코너를 읽다가 보니까 어떤 분께 미국에서 법대 공부를 하실 생각이시면 일정 길이의 영작을 매일 두개씩은 해야 한다고 충고하셨던 거 봤어요. 그래서 앞으로 저도 그렇게 열심히 해볼 생각이거든요.

In general, most teenagers in my country are wildly excited by a star. In the afternoon,we can see easily many teenagers (길게 늘어서 있는 것을) in front of the broadcasting station. Also, if you see TV가요프로그램,you couldn't hear song. You only can hear teenagers' 괴성,소리. Many teenagers like to know all about a star. So they collect a star's pictures,and pile up news(스타들의 기사를 모으다.).Teenagers tend to equally follow a star's action,clothes. I think most teenagers are wildly excited by a star for a time(스타에 열광하는 것도 한때이다.).When they enter college and get a job, they will cherish it with memory(그들은 그것을 좋은 추억으로 간직할 것이다.).

In general, most teenagers in my country are wildly excited by a star. In the afternoon, we can see easily many teenagers lining the streets in front of the broadcasting station. On hit song programs on television, the songs cannot even be heard. All you can hear are the screams of the teenage audience. Many teenagers want to know everything about their favorite stars. So they collect pictures and newspaper clippings about them. They also copy their clothes, gestures and actions. I think that being wildly excited by stars is just a phase. Many Koreans want to meet English-speaking foreigners, but the number of foreigners who are able and willing to serve as conversation partners is quite limited. Unless you can meet them through your work or at school, it is usually quite difficult to find willing foreigners. One other possibility is to contact an English teacher at a language institute and ask him or her to introduce you to friends.

However, if you are willing to discuss Korean culture and to teach Korean language, you may be able to find partners who are the following:
1) foreigners who are studying in Korea. These students are usually studying Korean language, history, literature or culture at a university in Korea, such as Seoul National, Yonsei, Sogang, Koryo, etc.

The five members were nude models, private dancers and actresses who answered an ad for a "streetwise, ambitious, outgoing ... all-girl act." They do not know how to play any musical instruments and they lip-synch their concerts. Clad in skintight Spandex, mini-skirts and high heels, they specialize in come-hither eyes and pouty lips set to mediocre dance beats. They are playing to the current vogue for sexually aggressive girlie women, and are part of the anti-feminist backlash that defines a powerful woman as a woman with an over-active sex drive who knows how to get men into bed. Like America's sexual revolution, the Spice Girls version of girl power is about sex, not women's equality. It's no threat to the various forms of patriarchy that work to keep women compliant, silent and powerless. No wonder the Spice Girls are a multi-million-dollar, international phenomenon.

The real "grrrl power" movement began in the early 1990s with "riot grrrls" who debated politics, created internet maganizes, organized rallies and demonstrations, and otherwise defied social, cultural and political convention as they fought for women's equality. But like so many other social movements, this too has been co-opted by commercial culture. The Spice Girls singing empty lyrics and selling sex as women's liberation is only one, particularly egregious example. They reinforce that old, patriarchal idea that a woman's power lies in being attractive to men. But real women know that power lies in knowledge, ability and independence. If 절의 시제가 가정법 과거완료라면 주절의 시제도 가정법 과거완료가 돼야 하지 않을까요?
저렇게 주 종절의 시제를 mix해 써도 되는 겁니까?

만약 첫번째 문장이 맞는 거라면 '가정'을 할 때 주 종절의 시제일치는 상관 않고 그냥 '사실'이 일어난 시제보다 한단계 과거로 나타내주면 되는 건가요? 아니면 시제를 섞어 쓰는데도 어떤 룰이 존재하나요? 예를 들어 시제를 섞을 때도 if절이 주절보다 하나 더 앞서야 한다던가 그런거요..

제가 알기로 가정법 미래나 단순 조건의 if 절이 시간적으로 미래에 대한 추측이나 조건을 나타내는 방법의 한 갈래라고 알고있는데요, 과연 이 둘은 내용상으로 어떻게 다른가요?

현재 25세입니다.
군대 제대한지 4개월이 된 지금까지..아직 직장은 없고...저를 소개하자면 순전히 노력형 이라는 말씀!
다른 분야(전공(전기공학) 및 컴퓨터, 역사, 음악 등)는...거의 전문가 수준 입니다. 자격증도 기사급으로 4개 가지고 있습니다. 그러나 영어 만큼은 아직도 무너뜨리지 못하고 있습니다.

따라서 그 누구보다도 노력을 2배 3배 하려고 늘 마음가짐을 갖고 그렇게 해왔습니다. 그런데 영어만큼은 노력만으로는 되지 않는 것 같군요. 세상의 영어 잘하는 거의 모든 사람이 '여우같이 공부하지 말고 곰같이 해라'라고 했지만 저는 곰보다도 미련하리 만치 열심히 했습니다. 그런데도 안되는 건 어쩔 수 없군요. 이건 제가 공부방식이 틀렸다는 것이라 생각됩니다. 특히 영어 단어에서 만큼은 잘 외워지지가 않는군요. 특별히 영어 단어 암기에 대한 진단을 받고 싶습니다. 저는 단어 암기시 입으로 소리내고..손으로 쓰고, 문장도 여러개 읽고 때로는 발음에 대한 의성을 우리나라 말과 매치 시켜서 암기도 해보고 그림을 그려가며 그림과 단어를 연결도 해보고...등등...하여간 갖은 방법을 모두 동원해 가며 외우지만..힘이 드는군요. 자꾸 잊어 버리는 게 문제입니다. 하루 6시간 이상씩 영어에만 매달리고 있습니다. 점점 절망적인 생각이 들기도 합니다. 어떤 식으로 공부하면 되겠는지 답장 부탁합니다.

A 401K program is an investment program for employees and is designed to earn money for retirement. The employee determines how much money from each paycheck is put into his or her 401K fund. The money that goes into this fund is not taxed as income, and so the employee also earns a tax break. The money is taxed later when the employee draws money out of his or her 401K. There are several restrictions governing when and for what purpose money can be drawn out of a 401K. Usually, each company has its own 401K program which is managed by company investment experts or an outside investment consulting firm. How the 401K is managed--where the money is invested, etc.--is therefore different for each company.

Income factor per employee most likely means the total income of the company divided by the total number of employees. However, it could also be related to how much income each employee brings into the company.

When I became 17 years old. I was able to have my own TV. Therefore, I was always able to watch any program without any arguing. Also, I got the most convenient thing I've never expected, called Remote Control. The remote control did the job well which I usually had done, so I like it very much. A few month later the remote control became my best friend, and I couldn't watch TV without it.

When I was a senior at my university, I bought a new TV which had a lot of function include closed caption, alarm clock and so on. Therefore, I don't need anyone for wake me up in the morning. I can do a lot of thing which used need somebody's help alone.

As time goes on, TV come to closer and more convineance to pelple, so TV make a lot of people can't live without it. However, the circumstance of watching TV is getting better doesn't mean the life is getting better. One day I found myself alone in front of TV set. Where are any other people who were watching TV with my family and me? Where are so many funny dialogue and laughs. Sometimes, I miss them and those time. I need a friend who had emotion not remote control.

The most important thing to consider when preparing for a long stay overseas is the children's education. Because the parents are going with their own goals, whether they be for education or business, parents will have less trouble adjusting to overseas life. And while living in America, English skills will improve readily with just a little bit of effort.

But unless parents are properly prepared, the children can have a very difficult, even traumatic, experience. In particular, going to school in a foreign country can be very traumatic for children. Thus parents should make every effort to learn about schools and programs for their children before they leave Korea. Since many schools have web sites, this can be done with several searches on the Internet.

Schools in large urban areas in America often have bilingual education for newly arrived immigrant children. Children of international students and foreign business executives can also participate in these bilingual programs. However, many of these programs are being cut or even terminated as anti-immigrant feeling increases in the United States.

If there are no bilingual programs available, the children have little option but to attend school in a completely English environment from the very beginning. This is difficult. There are three things that parens can do to help their children:

1) Always encourage and support the children, so that the children never lose their confidence.
2) Help the children attain some basic English reading skills appropriate to their age.
3) Try to find through Korean churches or Korean American Student Associations at universities a student who is fluent in English and has some knowledge of the Korean language. Hire such a student as a tutor for the children. Salary can be negotiated, but in the case of one child, an appropriate amount would be $10 per hour, for about three or four hours each week. This student can help the children with their homework, answer their questions about American schools and American children (based on the student's own experiences growing up in America), and help the children adjust to American school life. This student would also be able to help the parents understand notices and letters that the school sends to parents. A Korean American college student who has lived in the United States since about the age of 10 would be ideal.

Once parents arrive in America, they should also make sure to visit their children's school and meet their teachers. Make sure to telephone and make an appointment, since unannounced visits are considered impolite in American society. When dealing with the teachers, remember that in America, parents have more power than the teachers. While teachers should be respected, parents have the final word regarding the education of their children.

Also, if your child receives punishment or is otherwise disciplined at school, make sure that he/she really deserves it. For instance, a child may get involved in a fight at school not because he is a bad child, but because another child made fun of him with racial remarks or curses. In this case, while your child may deserve punishment, the other child should also be punished for making the racial remarks. Because racism remains a significant problem in the United States, this kind of incident is often reported by Asian, black and Latino families.

And finally, make sure that your children speak only Korean at home, or else they will quickly forget the Korean language, leading to many difficulties. It is also advisable to find ways to educate the children in Korean subjects so that when they return to Korea they do not find themselves behind their schoolmates. It is especially advisable to tutor the children separately in math and Korean, since the level of math in American schools is significantly lower than that in Korean schools.

1) 많은 분들이 영영 사전을 가지고 영어 공부를 시작하는 데 위험한 방법입니다. 영영 사전은 꼭 필요할 경우에만 참고하시는 게 좋습니다. 미국에 계실 동안에도 마찬가지입니다.
2) 영작 연습은 외국인과 정기적으로 만나 회화를 할 기회가 있는 분이나 그렇지 못한 분 모두에게 회화력을 기르는 데 있어서 아주 좋은 방법입니다.
3) 큰 소리로 어린이용 영어 소설 책을 읽는 것도 아주 좋은 방법이죠.
4) 시간과 돈만 허락된다면 미국에 계실 동안에라도 회화 교습을 받으시는 게 좋습니다. 이때 주의하실 점은 능동적으로 수업에 참여해야 합니다. 다시 말씀 드리면 책이 필요 없을 정도로 수업 준비를 충분히 해야 한다는 뜻입니다. 이렇게 하신다면 투자한 것 이상의 효과를 볼 수 있습니다.
5) 미국에서 어학연수를 받으실 때도 마찬가지로 수업 시간에 책이 필요 없을 정도로 공부를 충분히 해 간다면 재미있게 많은 걸 배울 수 있습니다.

The Breastfeeding Mother and Child

When my mother had her first child in 1960s Korea, everyone expected this medical student to feed her baby the scientific way, with infant formula. But she insisted on the old-fashioned way, breastfeeding just as generations of mothers had done before her. As a pediatrician, my mother advised her patients to breastfeed, even though the male-dominated pediatric establishment recommended infant formula. She believed that science cannot always improve on nature. Some thirty years later, this establishment finally recognized the wisdom of women like my mother. In revised guidelines released in late 1997, the American Academy of Pediatricians recommends breastfeeding babies until the age of one, and preferably longer.

This comes after more than seven decades of women being told by the male-dominated medical establishment that breastfeeding was backward and somehow barbaric, and that educated, loving mothers fed their babies formula made by pharmaceutical companies. But female doctors like my mother knew that this was bad for babies. One such doctor, Cicely Tyson, delivered a speech in 1939 titled "Milk and Murder," charging that infant formula was killing babies. Indeed, pharmaceutical companies made millions pushing infant formula on women around the world, and the result has been an increase in infant deaths. This has been especially true in underdeveloped countries where women had little money to buy infant formula, no clean water, and no way to sterilize bottles and nipples. The result has been massive malnutrition and the deaths of infants throughout poor countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia.

The campaign against breastfeeding has been so successful in developed countries like the United States, Canada and Britain, that the overwhelming majority of new mothers do not breastfeed. Of those who try, about half give up within six weeks. Because their own mothers did not breastfeed, they have no one to help them overcome those first, sometimes difficult, months when both mother and child are learning how to breastfeed. But women can find help in organizations like La Leche League, a group of American women offering support groups and advice for breastfeeding mothers. A small company called Motherwear sells breast pumps, fashionable breastfeeding clothes, and other essentials so that women can breastfeed discreetly in public and continue to feed their babies breastmilk even while working. A Motherwear camisole under a modern hanbok is perfect for breastfeeding while at a friend's house, traveling, or eating out with your family.

A return to breastfeeding would bode well for the health of both babies and mothers. Breastfeeding provides perfect nutrition and essential immunities for babies, and helps women recover faster from childbirth. Medical studies also indicate that women who breastfeed have lower rates of breast cancer and uterine cancer than women who do not, and that breastfed babies have fewer ear infections and other illnesses than babies fed infant formula. Breastfed babies are also more alert and tend to develop faster. And anyone who has ever breastfed her precious baby to sleep knows that the emotional benefits--the development of a lifelong bond between mother and child--are priceless.

'안전 불감증'이라는 단어를 아무리 사전을 찾아보아도 나오질 않습니다. 제 힘으로는 도저히 안되겠군요.
그리고 카피는 'It's gone'으로 정했는데...안전 의식이 우리의 마음에서 사라졌다는 뜻으로 카피를 만들었습니다. 이 표현 방식이 맞는지 궁금합니다. 그리고 'It's'는 'It is'인지 'It was'인지도 궁금하네요.

Autumn of Korea is very beautiful and exciting, so most Korean like autumn of Korea and take pride of it. It was also my favorite season until I went to into the Army, but it wasn't any more from I became a rookie of the Army. Why? Let me tell you?

A day in the Army was always busy, especially for the rookie. From 6:00 a.m. until I went to bed, I didn't have any spare time to rest. I acted such as a robert. Of course, the life gave me something good for my life after all, but I hated the tight schedule something like that those time.

Buy the way, I met the biggest enemy among those busy schedule in autumn. Can you guess what it was? In the morning after the rain which says summer is over, I was able to see it outside window and I was able to able to feel how strong enemy it was. It was falling leaves. From that day until the snow season, my busy life had to more busier and faster to gather the falling leaves, moreover it stole my short break time. Whenever it was and wherever I went, I met it and I had to pick it up. Most hatest day among them was the day after rainy day. I think you may know why it is? Even though each season gave me something bother me, to pick the leaves on the wet ground was my hatest thing.

I get a second fall after finish the military service. These time, I often see the workers who were gathering the leaves on campus. I can imagine how they feel when they see the falling leaves and I want to say thank you for their work.

Great Books By Women

Judging from the Modern Library's July 1998 list of the top 100 novels of the 20th century, great literature can be ranked (James Joyce's Ulysses is best, they said) and it is written mostly by white men. But many scholars and lovers of literature have been insisting for decades that great literature is written by men and women all over the world, in many languages other than English.

To recognize some of the women writers ignored by the Modern Library, a feminist journal of art and culture has compiled a list of "100 Great 20th-Century English-language Works of Fiction by Women." The list cites only one work per author in order to include as many writers as possible, and also lists the works alphabetically by the author's last name, to indicate that great literature suffers no ranking.

The list includes Toni Morrison's Beloved, a story of an enslaved woman's fierce love for her child; To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee's story of race and justice in the American south; I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou's autobiographical account of growing up black and female; and Joy Kogawa's Obasan, a story about a Japanese immigrant family in Canada during World War II. 안녕하세요? 저는 영어에서 많이 쓰이는 정관사에 대한 질문을 하고 싶습니다.
예를 들어 go to school와 go to the school에는 의미상의 차이가 있다고 알고 있습니다. 전자는 학생이 학교에 가는 것이고 후자는 공부보다는 다른 목적으로 학교에 가는 것이 맞는지요.

1-1) go to school: 일반적으로 학생이 학교에 가다라는 표현으로 사용됨
Americans go to school five days a week, but Koreans go to school six days a week.
2) go to the school: 학생이나 일반인이 공부 목적으로나 다른 목적으로 어느 한 학교를 지정해 놓고 갈 때 사용되는 표현
Tom went to the school in the neighborhood, but Sally went to the school downtown.

2. '병원에 입원하다'라는 뜻으로는 be in the hospital, be hospitalized 모두 가능합니다.
주의! be in hospital이란 표현은 존재하지 않습니다.
He was hospitalized for some tests.
He was in the hospital for three days.

3. 일반적으로 추상적인 것보다 구체적인 것을 가리킬 때 정관사를 사용합니다. 그러나 예외가 많기 때문에 주의해야 합니다.
'정관사 용법(1), (2)', 'the, some?', 'church, the church?', 'The, the?'를 참조하시기 바랍니다.

유학생들이 논문을 쓸 때 가장 많이 틀리는 게 정관사입니다.

Most of people who visit your homepage maybe are using web browsers for Windows. In this case, there is no problem to see your home page that have links to the files of Korean name, I guess. But, in my case, I couldn't read those pages because the web browser I am using doesn't support the Korean filenames. I dont' think this is only applied to me. If you change those Korean filenames to English ones, everybody can see your homepage including me.

영작을 하는 거야 자신이 얼마든지 기회를 만들 수 있지만 그것에 대한 어떤 설명 또는 교정 같은 것을 받기는 조금 어려운 상황에서 그렇게 영어로 작성한 글에 대해서 교정을 해서 보내 주시는 것이 무척 반가웠고 감사하게 느꼈습니다.
그럼 어제 제가 드린 제안에 대해서 다시 말씀을 드리겠습니다.
지금 한글로 메일을 작성하고 있는 것처럼 웹브라우저에서도 한글로 되어 있는 홈페이지를 볼 수 있고 또 텍스트를 입력할 수 있는 곳에서 한글로 입력도 할 수 있습니다. 한글을 지원하지 않는다고 말씀 드린 것은 그런 웹페이지 자체에 대한 것이 아니라 화일명에 대한 것이었습니다.
예를 들어 설명을 드리겠습니다. YESusa의 홈페이지에서 보면 '질문-답변 모음'은 'data.html'이란 화일로 되어 있습니다. 그리고 '영어공부법', '독해', ... 등은 한글로 된 화일명으로 되어 있습니다. 제가 생각하건 데 아마 '영어공부법'은 '영어공부.html'라는 화일로 되어 있는 것 같고, '독해'는 '독해.html'이란 화일로 되어 있는 것 같습니다. 그런데 사실 이 화일명은 제가 짐작으로 말씀을 드린 것입니다. 저는 이 화일명을 볼 수 없기 때문이죠. 제가 사용하는 웹브라우저에서는 한글로 된 화일명은 '????.html' 식으로 나타납니다. '?'의 숫자는 한글의 글자수로 생각되구요. 제가 드린 제안은 이렇게 한글로 되어 있는 화일명을 영어로 바꾸시는 것이 어떨까 하는 것이었습니다.'독해.html'은 'reading.html'로, '듣기.html'은 'listening.html'로,...이런 식으로 말이죠.
이렇게 한글로 된 화일명은 윈도우즈 계열(Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT)에서는 문제가 되지 않을 것 같습니다. 한글 지원이 잘 되니까요. 대부분의 사람들은 이런 계열을 사용하고 있기 때문에 별 문제가 없을 것이구요.

3. 회의를 시작할 때 사용할 수 있는 표현: Let's begin this meeting.
안건을 발표하고 나서 토론하려고 할 때 사용할 수 있는 표현: Let's open the floor for discussion.

4. staffman은 존재하지 않는 단어입니다. 대신 staff라는 단어가 사용됩니다. staff는 상황에 따라서 한 사람을 지칭할 수도 있고 여러 사람을 지칭할 수도 있습니다.

My question is like this.
I have consulted COLLINS COBUILD DICTIONARY . I think it's a good one. But I have some bad(?) habit. When I find some unknow words, I have to consult it . If not I think I cannot know the exact meaning and correct usages. But IT TAKE TOO LONG TIME.
I know there is no royal road of learning languages but I guess there is some more efficient way. (for example to understand what it means exactly I have to find 10 or 15 word.) That's OK. But I think EXACT USAGE is more important thing than just KNOW THE MEANING . SO everytime I write all the examples of this dictionary down. Do I have some problem in learning a language? Or I'd better stick to this way?
Some people just say that READ as many books as you can. If you cannot understand the sentence structure or something, then consult the dictionary or grammer book.
Therefore I would like to know which is better way of language learning , find and write down everyword and their usages when you encounter it OR just read and read many articles even if you don't know the exact useage . By reading many articles or paragraphs , you can get the useage of it.

What do you think about my dilema ? Which do you prefer or agree? Aren't there any good mixed way?

Yes, there is a better way, a blend of the two methods you find yourself stuck between.

The shortcoming of the dictionary method is that it reduces you to memorizing definitions and usages. This is not an effective way to learn a language. You learn only the meaning of a word and a few sentences, but you do not make that word your own. Only when a word is your own will you be able to use it fluently in conversation and in writing.

The shortcoming of the read-everything method is that you are left with only vague ideas about the meaning of words, and reading ability does not improve quickly. The advantage is that over time you absorb the meanings of words in their context, and you develop not only an understanding of the words' meanings, but also a feel for them.

The best method is a combination:
1) Read many books and articles in areas that you are interested in. Read for general meaning and do not worry if you do not understand everything. The important thing is that you understand the basic meaning of the book or article.
2) Look up a word only if the word is essential to understanding the basic meaning or if the word occurs more than two or three times.
3) Keep a small notebook and write down these words and definitions in it. Keep this notebook in your bookbag or pocket and go over it occasionally while you are on the bus or subway or waiting in line. When the notebook is full, put it away in a drawer and start a new notebook. Don't worry about memorizing everything in these notebooks. It would be a waste of time and not every word will be useful to you. If you continue to read English books and articles, then the words that are important will keep coming up and so you will be able to learn them.
4) If you have an opportunity for English conversation or writing, try to use the new words you learn.

If you follow this method, you will find that your vocabulary increases, your feel for the structure and logic of the English language increases and thus your reading comprehension ability improves, and that you learn precisely those words that are most useful to you.

I use the COLLINS COBUILD DICTIONARY . I think it's a good one. But I have a habit that I think may be bad. When I run into an unknown word, I have to look it up. If I don't, then I feel like I don't really know its meaning and usage. But this takes too long.

I know there is no shortcut for learning languages, but I think there must be a more efficient way. For example, once I look up a word, I have to look up 10 or 15 words to understand the exact meaning of that original one world. And I think that the exact usage is more important than just knowing the meaning, so I write down all the examples in the dictionary. Is this a problem? Or can I stick with this method?

Some people recommend just reading as many books as possible. If you cannot understand the sentence structure or something, then consult the dictionary or a grammar book.

So I would like to know which is the better way to learn a language: look up every word as you encounter it and write down the usages; or just read and read many articles even if you don't know the exact usage of the words you encounter, and absorb the usages and meanings in that way.

What do you think? Isn't there any other way?

I have a question about the word, 'GUY', please. If we look up it in the English-Korean dictionary, most of the meanings (usage) are something about a bad image. However, most Americans seem to use the word frequently in the living conversation. For example, "where are you guys from?" Please explain whether it has some negative image or not at all.

The word guy once referred to men only, particularly lower class men and laborers. But in contemporary American English, the word is used often in casual conversation with no negative connotation. But one must still be careful with its usage, for the following reasons:

1) Although it is used to refer to both men and women, it remains a masculine word and some people do not like to use it to refer to women.

2) The word is not a formal, polite term, and therefore should not be used to refer to people who should be addressed politely.

3) Because of its original meaning, it can also be used as a small insult of sorts. For example, referring to a woman as a guy can be an insult implying that she is not feminine and attractive, and referring to someone as "just a guy" can mean that he is not an important person, but someone whom one can ignore.
