본 행사는 국립국악원에서 개설한 주한 외국인을 위한 국악문화학교로 우리나라의 전통 음악과 무용을 직접 배우고 익히게 함으로써 5천년 역사를 지닌 한국의 전통 예술에 대한 이해를 돕고자 마련한 것입니다.
오늘 발표회는 지난 12월12일부터 2개월 동안 매주 토요일마다 2시간씩 익힌 솜씨입니다만 짧은 강습 기간으로 인하여 다소 미흡한 점이 있으리라 생각됩니다. 혹 실수가 있더라도 아낌없는 박수로 격려하여 주시기 바랍니다.

The Int'l School for Kugak which was organized by NCKTPA, supported by The Korea Times was open in order to help foreigners living in Korea better understand Korea's rich artistic and cultural traditions. Since the participants have learned for very short time (only 14 hours), there might be something to be desired. But I hope you encourage them with a big applause.
As you see the program, our presentation will be followed by the Congratulatroy concert, Closing ceremony and tea party at the corner of lobby of this small Hall.

1998년 12월 13일자 동아일보에 애국가 영문 번역에 관한 기사가 실렸더군요.
"하느님이 보우하사 우리나라 만세"는 "God watch o'er our land forever! Our country forever!"로 번역돼 있고 기자는 '하나님이 우리를 보우하시므로 우리가 영원할 수 있다는 뜻'이므로 "Long Prosper our fatherland with God watching o’er it." 정도는 되어야 한다는 것 그리고 후렴 "무궁화 삼천리 화려강산"은 "Rose of Sharon, thousand miles of range and river land!" (수천마일에 걸친 무궁화, 그리고 강의 나라)로 변역되어 있다는 기사였습니다.
저의 의문점은 첫째 위 영문 번역들이 제대로 됐는지 둘째 o'er의 뜻입니다.
끝으로 "김대중 행정부의 대북(對北)정책을 'The North Korea Policy of the Kim Dae Jung Administration'이라고 표기해‘대북정책'의 의미를 불확실하게 만들어 놓은 우를 범하고 있다"라는 기사도 함께 실렸습니다.

애국가의 전체 분위기와 시적인 표현을 고려할 때 첫번째 문장이 더 좋지만 다음 표현이 가장 좋습니다.

God은 기독교의 하나님을 지칭하므로 the heavens로 번역하는 게 애국가의 하느님에 더 근접한 표현입니다.

저는 "have had p.p."란 시제를 학교에서 배운 기억이 없는데, 이렇게 현재 완료와 과가 완료가 혼합된 형태의 시제를 뭐라고 부르는지, 또 주로 어떤 상황에서 쓰이는지 궁금해 편지 드립니다.

Passion for Justice
Yuri Kochiyama was born to Japanese immigrants in California. As a young woman during World War II, she was incarcerated along with some 120,000 other Japanese Americans in internment camps. This happened because the United States government believed that Japanese Americans were all spies for the Japanese Empire, even though most of them had been born in America. The experience changed Kochiyama. Until then, she had had no interest in social issues. But in the concentration camps she learned about injustice. There, she found her passion for justice. Today, that passion has made her the most famous Asian American activist.
After her marriage to Bill Kochiyama, she and her husband moved to Harlem, a center of the black nationalist movement. She became friends with Malcolm X and an active supporter of national liberation movements. When Malcolm was assassinated, she was at his side. She also became involved during the 1980s in the movement to win reparations for the Japanese Americans who were sent to internment camps during World War II. Even though she is now 77 years old, she remains active in numerous struggles for justice. For her, mere civil rights is not always enough. National liberation is also necessary. In a recent interview with the newspaper Revolutionary Worker, she said:
"What I would say to students or young people today, I just want to give a quote by Franz Fanon. And the quote is, "Each generation must, out of its relative obscurity, discover its mission, fulfill it or betray it." And I think today part of the mission would be to fight against racism and polarization, learn from each other's struggle, but also understand national liberation struggles--that ethnic groups need their own space and they need their own leaders. They need their own privacy."

2) "By" is used to indicate contrast and a commencement or cessation of action.
I will return by this evening.
By yesterday, he had already visited all his relatives.

There are several English-language books on women published by Ewha Women's University Press, including journals such as "Asian Journal of Women's Studies." Some of these may be suitable, and all would be available at the university bookstore on campus.
One book that is used in many introductory feminism courses at American universities is titled, "Women: A Feminist Perspective," edited by Jo Freeman and published by Mayfield Publishing Company. 저는 Canada에 온지 15개월 정도 되었구요. Electrical Engineering 2학년에 재학중에 있습니다. 개인적으로 언어에 대한 남다른 관심 가지고 있으며 그것이 저를 여기까지 오게 만들었구요. 취업도 여기서 할려고 하는 것은 영어를 누구보다 잘 할려는 저의 의지 때문입니다. 전공 특성상 Arts & Science에 있는 것보다 essay라든가 reading을 많이 안하니까 겉으론 영어에 큰 부담은 없지만 역시 listening 과 speaking 때문에 stress를 많이 받습니다. 전공과목을 열심히 하면 영어가 따라온다기 보단 영어가 받침이 되어야 수업을 이해하는 데나 시험에 도움이 된다고 곧잘 느낍니다.
15개월 전의 영어 실력보다 지금의 영어 실력이 더 나은 것은 분명하지만 Native speaker들과는 아직도 대화를 나눌 정도가 안됩니다. 주위에 대부분의 아시아 학생들이 그렇듯 현재 자신의 영어 구사 능력에 대충 만족하고 자기 나라말 쓰기 바쁘지 저처럼 영어 speaking 향상에 열을 올리지 않거든요.
Volunteer English Tutor Program이 이 학교에 있다지만 지원자도 거의 없구...유학생활을 하면서 listening 과 speaking을 늘릴 수 있는 최선의 방법은 어떤 게 있을까요? 그 질문을 제 스스로에게 던지면 라디오와 t.v 를 자주보고 신문을 자주 읽고 등등 흔히 하는 말들로 답하곤 하지요. 왕도가 없다는 것은 잘 알고 영어 느는 게 느려서 답답합니다. 집에서 혼자 speaking 연습을 합니다만 이런 식으로 하면 얼마나 나아질까 확신도 안 서고...선생님의 친절한 조언 부탁드립니다.

대학1학년 때부터 ccc에 참가했다. 세상을 살면서 확실한 가치관과
인생관/세계관을 가지고 살고싶었다. 당시의 혼란한 사회환경에서 어떻게
살아야 하는가에 고민하던 중 마침 ccc멤버의 친절한 카운셀링으로 난
ccc모임에 참가했다. ccc는 한국의 100개 이상의 대학에서 활동하면서
한민족의 복음화와 한국 사회에 건전한 삶을 전파하는 단체였다. 멤버수로는
이제 그의 100만명이 넘어서는 한국 최대의 써클일 것이다. 이곳에서 나는
1988년 서울올림픽 당시 서울 강남지역 대표를 1년간 수행했다. 재학생수는

I was desperate to get a concrete 가치관 and the view of life.
Conflicting with the topic how to live in such a 혼란한 society, bingo!
a CCC member attracted me with sincere counselling and I made to join in
CCC.As a biggest circle in Korean having over 1 mil. members ,CCC was a
organization which 헌신하다 한민족복음화 and try to contaminate Korean
society with sound lifestyle. I had been a leader of Kangnam province in
which there are 6 univeersities. The job was to administrate and help
overall operation of more than 600 colege students and 2,000 graduators.
The reason why I was picked up for this job was (원만한) inter-personal
relationship owing to my humorous characteristics and pursuasive power.
I had kept good relationship with 선후배 and 지도간사들. Considering my
characteristics, 간사님들은 chose me for a leader who can revitalize the
communication network in CCC, big organization.
First of all, I tried to be a 전초대 to accomplish the organizational
goal. As spending more time, acting at first, and counselling fulent
each member's personal problems I pursuaded members to 헌신하다 for our
goals. One other main 사역 during this time was to set strong friendship
between 재학생들 and 졸업생들.

It brings the Christian gospel and principles for a sound lifestyle to Koreans. I was a leader in Kangnam Province, which has chapters in six universities. I was picked for this job because I am easy to get along with, have a good sense of humor, and have strong persuasive skills. I also had good relations with leaders in the organization as well as both senior and junior members. Thus organization leaders chose me as someone who can strengthen communication networks among various sections of the overall organization.
To accomplish the organization's goals, I tried to be a model. I acted first in the belief that others would follow my example. By investing a great deal of time and also counseling many members, I was able to persuade them to sacrifice for our goals. Another important achievement during this time was to develop stronger ties between current students and alumni.

From I entered the university, my role was changed. I became his
private teacher. At that time he was a third grade at middle school, so
he had a lot of worries and fears. I usually taught him English,
Mathematics, but sometimes I became his best counsellor. Because even
though I didn't have more experiences than anyone, but I was his uncle
and I understood him better than anyone.
After 4 years from then, during the time I worked in the Army,
I heard very surprising news about him. He applied for my university
and passed the entrance exam. I was happy and I couldn't believe
that he would become my junior. I always thought he was a just
little and annoying nephew, but it wouldn't be any more. He became
a university student, and he doesn't need my help any more.
Now, we're same seniors and we'll graduate next february, but
we're under different situation. One is always worry about future,
and the other is always give advice one. Do you think who gives
advices the other one? Me. No, it hasn't been true from I came
back to university. He'll go to the Army as an officer after he
graduate university, so he doesn't need worry about getting job and
a few years later. However, I haven't got a job until now, and I am
not sure what should I do under terrible economy situation.
Therefore, our role was changed.
It's so cold today. I'll leave library early and meet my best

Jungho: Women these days are getting noisier and noisier about equal rights. They've been influenced too much by Western thinking. We can't lose our Korean traditions to Westernization.
Miyoung: Western thinking? Western countries are just as sexist as modern Korea! We look to our own Korean heritage for equal rights. Don't you know that the male-dominated customs of Korea today are a recent development? They are only a few hundred years old. For thousands of years before that, our ancestors enjoyed a great deal of gender equality.
Jungho: Oh, come on. Men have always been dominant. That's the way it should be. Women need to be protected.
Miyoung: Women need equal rights and respect. Our ancestors gave women a great deal of respect. Couples lived with the wife's parents just as often as they lived with the husband's parents. Property was divided equally between sons and daughters, even when the daughters were married. A man respected and served his parents-in-law just as much as a women respected and served her parents-in-law. Recent evidence shows that these customs were prevalent from Koguryo days to the Hideyoshi invasions.
Jungho: What evidence?
Miyoung: Haven't you heard? A tomb was discovered recently, and letters and other artifacts there show that there was a great deal of gender equality in Chosun society. One letter is a love letter from a young wife to her dying husband. The letter proves that there was romantic love between men and women, and that women were able to express those kinds of feelings. The letter also indicates that there was mutual respect between husband and wife, and that the couple lived with the wife's family. Other letters found in the tomb include letters from the woman's father-in-law, and these letters show that property was divided equally between sons and daughters. I think that the great love expressed by the wife to her husband was possible precisely because men and women were equally respected.
Jungho: That's certainly interesting. So Korean tradition has changed. But the tradition we have now is also Korean.
Miyoung: Yes, both kinds of customs are Korean. So you can't argue that women who want equal rights and respect are Westernized and not Korean enough. Korea has a tradition of gender equality, a tradition of strong women who were respected. We feminists are invoking our Korean heritage for the sake of a brighter, more just future.

1) The expression "I'll tell her off" is slang for "I'm going to tell her why I'm mad at her in a very forceful and direct manner." It does not really mean "I'm going to scold her." To scold someone is to simply chastise someone for a mistake. To tell someone off is to express one's anger and discontent toward someone.
2a) Americans view the weasel as being a deceitful, cunning and slippery animal. Thus to call someone a weasel is to accuse them of being deceitful. Weasels are also known for their ability to suck out the contents of an egg while leaving the shell intact. This is where the expression "weasel word" comes from. Weasel words are words whose meaning is ambiguous and which leave sentences meaningless. A sentence full of weasel words appears to have meaning, but when closely examined the sentence is meaningless and has thus deceived the reader.
2b) The word boilerplate comes from the newspaper business. In the old days, newspapers would receive syndicated material such as columns in the form of mats. Molten lead would be poured into the mats to form the plates from which newspapers were printed. These were called boilerplates, and once formed, they -- and thus the text they contained -- could not be changed. Lawyers borrowed this word to refer to standard text, i.e., text that remains unchanged, in legal papers such as contracts and wills. The word boilerplate is now used to refer to text or writing that is unoriginal, standard and used without little attention to actual meaning. But of course, the judgment that a certain expression or piece of writing is boilerplate is often subjective. Therefore it is not possible to provide appropriate examples.

앞서 말했듯이 MTM 한번 보았구요. (고교 시절 것은 군대에 반납 한 것 같음 *): ) 지금은 'GRAMMAR IN USE' by Cambridge 라는 원서를 보고 있어요. 단어도 그리 어렵지 않아 이해는 어느 정도 되구요. 그 외에 '용법'에 대해서는 'ENGLISH USAGE' by Collins Cobuild 보고 있습니다. '사전'은 어려운 명사 같은 건 영한 사전을 보구요. 그 외엔 영영사전(Cambridge International Dictionary of English)을 보고 있습니다. '듣기'는 아침에 '굿모닝팝스', 'EBS 라디오 듣기'...'CNN-그림만 보고 아주 가끔 아는 단어가 스쳐 지나감'을 하구요. '받아쓰기'도 쪼금씩 하고 있어요. '영작'(Writing)은 아직까진 주제를 가지고 해보질 않았죠. '독해'는 특별이 하는 건 없구, Internet에서 DejaNews 나 유머 사이트에서 쉬운 걸로 몇번 읽고 있습니다. - 대충 이 정도구요.
한가지 문제점이 있다면, 이런 식(문법,용법,듣기,쓰기,독해)으로
계속 공부를 해간다면 좋겠지만, 중구난방으로 오늘은
문법 했다가, 내일은 용법... 이런 식으로 공부를 하거든요.
그리고 아직은 초보(?)라 한가지에 시간도 많이 소비하구요.

2) 문법 공부하는 목적이 영어의 기본을 정리하는 거라면 영문 문법책으로 공부할 필요가 없지 않나 생각합니다. 물론 필요할 때 참고하시는 건 좋습니다. 영문법을 정리하고 싶다면 MTM 대신 토익 문법책을 권합니다. 아시다시피 토익 문법은 생활영어 문법이므로 어렵지 않아서 1석 2조의 효과를 얻을 수 있습니다.
3) vocabulary 책은 잠시 접어두시는 게 좋겠습니다.
4) 영어의 기본을 다질 경우 한꺼번에 여러 책을 보는 것보다는 한 책을 선택해서 보는 게 좋습니다. 문법, 독해, 어휘, 회화, 영작을 한꺼번에 공부할 수 있도록 구성된 책이 있다면 금상첨화겠죠.

안녕하세요...늦게나마 영어 공부를 하고자 하는 직장인입니다.
요즘 저는 pick-up phone이라는 phone teaching을 통한 영어 공부를 하고있습니다. 바쁜 직장인을 위하여 10분 정도 수업을 하고 회원이 시간이 나름대로 free talking을 할 수 있게 하는 시스템입니다. 영어를 워낙 못하는데다 전화상으로 공부를 한다는 것이 여간 힘들지는 않지만 학원이 등록하고는 일이 생겨 빼먹기가 일쑤인 경우에 비해서 괜찮다고 생각합니다. 그런데, free talking시 선생님들이 교포이기에 말이 막히면 한국말로 자꾸 하게 됩니다. 짧은 시간에 해야 하기 때문에 제가 영어로 완벽한 문장을 구사하기 힘든 것도 있기도..한데.....짧은 몇 마디가 끝나고 나면 전화 받은 선생님의 수업 시간 이라고 해서 그냥 말도 제대로 나눠보지도 못하고 끊게 되는 경우도 종종 있습니다. 등록한지 오래된 것은 아니지만 짧은 시간 내 많은 것을 얻으려는 저의 욕심인지는 몰라도 저에 경우는 어떤 식으로 free talking을 진행해야 좀더 효과적인 방법을 올릴 수 있을까요?

Of course, she and I think that Chinese Lunar Calendar is
based on traditional Oriental lunar system. What she
wondered is the date in Chinese Lunar Calendar is exactly
the same as that in Korean Lunar Calendar. Does the age
according to Chinese Lunar Calendar is the one we call "만
나이"? It is a very confusing, isn't it?

The lunar calendar used in Korea is based on the Chinese lunar calendar. Our lunar calendar is actually based not only on the rhythm of the moon, but also on the rhythm of the sun. To our knowledge, the dates on our lunar calendar are the same as those on the Chinese lunar calendar.
Chronological age, or 만 나이, counts the day of birth as age zero, and one year is added for every birthday from then on. This can be done based on one's lunar birthday, or based on one's Western-style solar birthday. Korean age is based on the New Year, so that one year is added to one's age every New Year. In addition, Korean age counts the 10 months within the mother's womb as a year of life and includes that in the age. (Note: Koreans count the months of pregnancy by the lunar system such that one month equals four weeks. Thus pregnancy is 10 months long. Westerners, however, count by the solar system such that a month equals roughly 30 days and thus consider pregnancy to be nine months. Medical doctors consider a full-term pregnancy to be 40 weeks.)
Therefore, the chronological age of a baby born on 02-19-1965 (whether by the solar or the lunar calendar) would be one year on 02-19-1966 and two years on 02-19-1967. Today this baby would be 33 years old in chronological age.
But the Korean age of this same baby would be two years on 01-01-1966 and three years on 01-01-1967, and thus today this baby would be considered to be 34 years old in Korean age.
Because the solar calendar and the lunar calendar do not correspond, it is possible for the Korean age of a person calculated by the lunar calendar to be different from that calculated by the solar calendar. For example, a child born on 01-02-1975 by the solar calendar would be born sometime during the 11th month of 1974 by the lunar calendar. Thus this person's Korean age by his/her lunar birthday would be 25 years, but his/her Korean age by his/her solar birthday would be 24 years.
In addition, the calculation of what 띠 (Westerners usually call this the Chinese Zodiac sign) a person is born into is always done according to the lunar calendar, never the solar calendar.

In meaning, tense (I've learned that 'be going to' expresses nearer future whereas 'will' is used for unspecified time of future.), usage in construction of sentence, etc..

'I wouldn't have any idea until I get there.' is not quite correct as a translation in this case because it is a speculative sentence.
'I won't have any idea until I get there.' is better, but it is not quite as accurate a translation as "I have to go and see what's there." Also, it is a rather awkward-sounding answer to the question in the dialogue.
Both 'What will you buy me?' and 'What are you going
to buy me?' are fine. The latter is more casual, because of the use of 'going to' in place of 'will.' There is also, as you noted, a slight difference between 'will' and 'going to' where 'going to' can indicate the near future as opposed to a unspecified future. But that is not always the case. For example:
'I am going to be a doctor' is more commonly used than 'I will be a doctor,' even though becoming a doctor is something left to the unspecified future.
In addition, the verb 'will' emphasizes specific intent and is often used when volunteering to do something. For example:
Who's going to help me cook dinner?
---> I will, Mom.
