Dear YESusa,

Among the responses in your last e-mail, I have some additional questions.

"Hello, this is Kyunghee. I called to do some free talking." A: The act of calling is in the past, since one must call first before one can be talking on the phone. Thus the simple past tense is proper.

Above is what you said in your last email.
If I follow your logic, I think I can never use the present perfect tense whatsoever because at the moment we say something it becomes the past. In your logic, I cannot use "I've finished the work" if it is not at the very moment I finished the work. I must be doing something else whatever it is after I finished the work. So, it's impossible to use the present perfect tense. What do you think? I need your help.

And I need your help in a similar situation.
"Have you brought an unbrella?" and "Did you bring an unbrella?" How would you differentiate the two? I need your help.

Your reply would be appreciated.

JSW´Ô²²
´äº¯ º¸³»µå¸³´Ï´Ù.
The present perfect tense is what can be called a comparative tense, that is, it is used to differentiate between two or more actions that take place at different points in time. In general, the present perfect is also used to discuss actions that took place in the past but are somehow linked to the present. Certain actions in English rarely allow for that. The action "call" to mean "telephone" is one of them. The simple past tense is preferred. The logic of the language holds that one calls, the action is over, and that is that. The action "marry" is similar. It makes no sense in English to say "He has married her." One simply says, "He married her."

"Have you brought an umbrella?" and "Did you bring an umbrella?" are both proper. The difference is very slight and has to do with etiquette. The first sentence is generally considered to be more polite and formal than the second.

"Fill in the form." is not used. The proper expression is "Fill out the form." However, if one is talking about just a portion of a form, then both "fill in" and "fill out" can be used.

For example:
Fill out/in this section.
You don't need to fill out the entire form. You can just fill out/in these lines.

1. Below is your correction sent to ¹ÚÁÖ´Ô.
"I also had good relations with leaders in the organization as well as both senior and junior members."
2. Below is to ÀÌõǥ´Ô.
"~ he doesn't need to worry about getting a job or about the next few years"

In the first sentence, you omitted the preposition, "with" right before "both." I'd like to know about the possibility that the sentence could then be interpreted as "I had both senior and junior members," not "I had good relations with both senior and junior members." I know it is awkward to interpret it in the former way in terms of the context. But it still leaves the possibility to think that way, I expect.

By the same token, if you can skip the preposition in the first sentence , I suppose, you can also skip the preposition "about" in the second sentence like "~ he doesn't need to worry about getting a job or the next few years." What do you think? In the sentence "I love people in America as well as in Korea", however, I think it'll be awkward if we omit the latter preposition "in." Would you explain the reason why we can or cannot omit those prepositions?

Especially when it comes to the sentence which could be interpreted in either way, I suppose, I have to take extra care in omitting the prepositions even though the above mentioned sentences are not ambiguous. I need your help; I've always been haunted by curiosity like this.

´äº¯
The first sentence cannot be interpreted as you suggest, because it is not plausible for the subject "I" to have members.

The preposition "about" should not be omitted in the second sentence because the two phrases that follow are not similar in structure, one is an -ing phrase and the other is a noun (time) phrase.

In the sentence, "I love people ..." it simply sounds better to use "in" in both places. This is a matter of style, not grammar.

Áú¹® 2
In your correction to ÀÌõǥ´Ô, you said "I had to feed him, change his clothes, and other things too." I think it's more proper to put "do" before "other things too" not to let "other things too" stand alone. I need your help.

´äº¯
Both are correct, but letting "other things too" stand alone is generally preferred because it is a more inclusive expression.

Áú¹® 3
This is your correction to someone. "Hello, this is Kyunghee. I called to do some free talking." In my opinion, if Kyunghee is still on the phone, I think it's more appropriate that Kyunhee use the present perfect tense, not the past tense. What do you think about putting "have" before "called."

´äº¯
The act of calling is in the past, since one must call first before one can be talking on the phone. Thus the simple past tense is proper.

Áú¹® 4
If I say " This is not a Japanese company, but a Korean company." Can I omit the indefinite article "a" before "Korean company"? And what about replacing the last "company" with "one." If I can't, please explain when I can use "one" in replacement of the latter noun of the repetitive nouns with some of your examples.

´äº¯
The article "a" must be included. This is a point of grammar, not style. However, it is possible to use "a Korean one" in place of "a Korean company." This is a matter of preference.

Áú¹® 5
Finally, I tend to pay too much attention to every usage of the words and sentences. I would appreciate it if you would give me a brief comment on my writing style and expressions for my better English.

´äº¯
Your writing shows promise, but needs guidance. YESusa cannot provide such guidance, however, for that is limited to YESusa members. It would not be fair to YESusa members to provide such services to non-members.

-------------------------------------------------------
I'd like to know whether the expression "we have received ~" is rarely used and awkward, sometimes with "well" at the end of it. What about the "kind" before "E-mail"? Is it not good to use "dated December 10" only in the above sentence or generally? What would, if any, be the difference?

Best Regards.
"SINCERE ENGLISH LEARNER"

Dear Jung Si Uk,

The expression "Thank you for ..." is usually preferable to "We have received ..." since the first expression takes care of both acknowledging receipt and giving thanks.

Describing a business email as "kind" is usually awkward. This adjective is better used to describe such things as assistance, consideration and the like.

The expression "dated December 10" can be used. Sometimes, however, using an expression such as "December 10 email" is preferable for its brevity. There is little difference in meaning, so which expression one uses depends on preference, style and the rhythm of the resulting sentence.

Sincerely,
YESusa

Burma's Voice of Hope

Aung San Suu Kyi's fight for democracy in Burma won her the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize. It has earned her a reputation as a steadfast believer in non-violence and nicknames like "Burma's Gandhi" and "Burma's Joan of Arc." It has also brought her and her followers great suffering, for Burma's military junta has been unrelentless in its suppression of the democracy movement. She was detained under house arrest from 1989 to 1995, and she still lives under constant surveillance. Three of her top aides, all cousins of hers, were recently arrested and tortured.

Despite her renown, Suu Kyi is an enigma. Few know much about her. Author Alan Clements spent five months interviewing her at her home in Rangoon, Burma's capital. As soon as he left the country, the military government permanently banned him from ever visiting Burma again. He recently published a chronicle of their conversations, titled The Voice of Hope. It is a rare glimpse of a strong, steadfast woman committed to democracy and non-violence. Suu Kyi discusses her life, her philosophy, and her hopes for the future. When Clements asked whether members of the military government would face criminal charges if her struggle for democracy is successful, Suu Kyi replied:

"I will never make any personal guarantees. It is only for our party, the National League of Democracy, a group that represents the people, to speak. But I do believe that truth and reconciliation go together. Once the truth has been admitted, forgiveness is far more possible. Denying the truth will not bring about forgiveness, neither will it dissipate the anger in those who have suffered."

Responding to criticism that non-violence is passive and ineffectual, she said:
"I do not believe in an armed struggle because it will perpetuate the tradition that he who is best at wielding arms, wields power. That will not help democracy. Non-violence means positive action. You have to work for whatever you want. You don't just sit there doing nothing and hope to get what you want. It just means that the methods you use are not violent ones."

Dear Jaungsy,

"during" is used to indicate a time period when something happened, but the exact length of that time period is unspecified.
For example:
We worked during our lunch break because we had to meet a deadline.
We took many long walks during the summer.

"for" is used to indicate a length of time.
For example:
We worked for five years to build this robot.
He tried for nearly a year to make the sale.

Dear YESusa,

Thank you for your answer.
The main reason why I wrote my previous e-mail in English was for begging you to proofread it, if it didn't bother you.

I've actually had an awful lot of questions to ask as far as English is concerned. I'm always ready to learn, and believe you could be of great help. The following question is one of them.
Would you explain the differences of "shimmer" and "glimmer", "flicker" and "blink", and "glow" and "shine" with some of the examples?

Your proofread regarding my last e-mail & today's e-mail would very much be appreciated.

With sincere thanks.
Jung Si Uk
P.S.) I am always worried whether my e-mail would be another burden to your daily work.

Dear Jung Si Uk,

YESusa regrets that it cannot proofread or edit your email, for that falls under services performed for members only. YESusa has a membership program for questions related to editing of written English or to translation. Other questions, such as questions of grammar, word usage, or word origin, are open to the public at large.

Your writing is quite good, but the expressions are sometimes awkward. Your writing ability would improve rapidly with a little guidance.

Regarding your vocabulary questions:
- "shimmer" refers to the sparkling of light and thus indicates light that moves rapidly in a shivering kind of motion.
For example: The moon shimmered in its reflection on the ocean waves.

- "glimmer" refers to a tiny piece or slice of light. Metaphorically, it is often used to indicate something that is just barely seen.
For example: The lake was just a glimmer in the distance.

- "flicker" refers to the movement of a flame or a light.
For example: "The candle flickered in the wind.

- "blink" refers to an on-and-off motion of light.
For example: There must have been a momentary loss of power, for the lights blinked.

- "glow" and "shine" refer to steady, smooth light. "glow" also has the connotation of beauty.
For example: The lights shone steadily all night.
The moon glowed like a jewel in the midnight sky.

Each of the words above can be used as both verbs and nouns.

Sincerely,
YESusa

Dear YESusa.

I happened to click this site about a week ago, and knew it was very good for study. Moreover, I felt that the people working in YESusa were enormously kind, and was thrilled with the way you answer to every one of the questions with all your heart.

Below is what I excerpted from your answer to JUY.
-----------------------------------------------------------
That day, I was scheduled to introduce each program before it begins. During the first part, I did well. But during the second part, I was totally confused. Before the student recital was finished (exactly two performances were left), I told the audience that "the next program is the congratulatory concert." As soon as I said that, I realized that I had made a mistake. So I confessed to them that "I am novice, please be understandable." Everyone in the audience laughed. It was so embarrassing.
-------------------------------------------------------------
My question is about tense. In your first sentence, you wrote, "before it begins." When the proceeding tense is past, could it be possible to use present tense in the same sentence? If so, would you explain the reason why?

In addition, I'd also like to have your correction of my original writing especially in terms of tense. In the second sentence of mine, I said, "I felt that the people working in YESusa were~~" If and when I feel that way till now, can I substitute "are" for "were"? And what would be the difference?

In the same sentence, I wrote, "the way you answer", not "the way you answered." I think it's possible if I want to express generally.

Your reply would be appreciated.
Best Regards
From "SINCERE ENGLISH LEARNER"

Dear Jung Si Uk,

Q 1. That day, I was scheduled to introduce each program before it begins.

A 1. "begins" is used in the present tense because this action comes after the action of "was scheduled" and also after the action of "introduce." However, it is also possible to use the past tense "began" in order to match the tense of "was scheduled. Which tense is used is a judgment call, and results in a slightly different feel to the writing.

Q 2. In the second sentence of mine, I said, "I felt that the people working in YESusa were~~" If and when I feel that way till now, can I substitute "are" for "were"? And what would be the difference?

A 2. In this case, the verb tense of "felt" and "were" should be matched. If you want to emphasize that you still feel this way, then the sentence should read:
I feel that the people working at YESusa are ....

Q 3. In the same sentence, I wrote, "the way you answer", not "the way you answered."

A 3. "the way you answer" is correct, but you can also use "the way you answered." Using the present tense makes it a general, habitual action, while using the past tense limits it to those actions in the past.

Also, the preposition "to" does not follow the verb "answer." Thus your sentence should read "the way you answer every question."

Please feel free to contact YESusa with any question you may have regarding English. YESusa has a membership program for questions related to editing of written English or to translation. Other questions, such as questions of grammar, word usage, or word origin, are open to the public at large.

Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, John would have prevented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now: for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he consented. And when Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him; and lo, a voice from heaven, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."

´äº¯: "came from Galilee to the Jordan to John" = "came from Galilee to the Jordan and to John"

The above phrase indicates that going to Jordan and going to John were simultaneous actions. The expression is somewhat old-fashioned and poetic, so it is rarely used in conversation, although it can still sometimes be found in writing. There is no need to change it.

A more contemporary expression would be: "to the Jordan to meet John" or "to the Jordan to find John." However, note that the meanings are slightly different. In the contemporary expressions, one action is done in order to do the second. In the expression found in your English translation of the Bible, the two actions are simply simultaneous.

Also note that the expression "from A to B to C" can indicate a sequence of destinations rather than two simultaneous actions, such that one went first to A, then to B and then to C. Which meaning is intended can be inferred from the context.

´äº¯: The comma is not grammatically necessary, although it can be used to indicate a break between the main sentence and the clause. Most specialists in English grammar, however, prefer to use the comma here. In this sentence, it is also used to indicate that the speaker paused briefly at that point.

Dear Kim Hyung-Min,

Both American department stores and some large national stores have gift certificates. Even fast food chains such as McDonald's and Burger King sometimes offer gift certificates, usually during the holiday season in December.

The term "consumer confidence" is used to mean that consumers feel confident enough to spend money and buy things. What they feel confident about is left unspecified, but it can be assumed that "consumer confidence" refers to consumers' confidence in the strength of the economy and in their own personal economic situation.

Sincerely,
YESusa

Listening, speaking, reading and writing can improve only with practice and proper guidance. Writing can help improve your speaking, for writing helps you think of the right words for your thoughts and ideas.

You said that you are not able to understand new words when you listen to AFKN. Try listening to the news using the following three-step method:

First, read the Korean newspapers. This will familiarize you with the news. Second, read the English newspapers. This will familiarize you with the English vocabulary related to current news events and issues. Third, listen to the English news on television. Because the first two steps have familiarized you with the news events and issues as well as with related vocabulary, you will find that you understand more of what you hear.

Follow these three steps daily, and your listening comprehension will improve, and you will be able to understand new words.

American Culture Conquers the Globe

Hyunjoo: I wonder why my Ms. magazine isn't here yet. Anything interesting in your latest issue of Mother Jones magazine?
Gina: The cover story is about how globalization has resulted in American culture conquering the world. What's worse is that people do more than just buy American cultural products, like movies or books or clothes. They start to adopt American values, too.
Hyunjoo: That's because globalization is just imperialism for the 21st century. It's good to be exposed to other cultures, but you can't have genuine give-and-take when the people and the cultures involved don't have equal power.
Gina: Right. And the culture with the power is American commercial culture, so the values people learn are America's worst, not America's best. The idea that a woman's worth depends on being young and sexy, for example, or the idea that greed is good.
Hyunjoo: You can definitely see that in Korea. Just look at the advertisements. Sex is used to sell everything these days, and most women you see on TV or in magazines are young and sexy. Traditional Korean patriarchy has many problems, but I don't think that valuing women only for their youth and sex appeal is one of them.
Gina: America didn't always focus on female sex appeal, either. Commercial culture helped turned sex appeal into the primary measurement of a woman's worth.

Hi, YESusa,
A couple of days ago, my daughter asked me who the old man standing in front of Kentucky Fried Chicken is. I answered that he might be a president of KFC or an inventor of KFC recipe but promised her that I would ask almighty YESusa. Who is the old man? Is it just a fictional creature?
My daughter was delighted when she got the answer for a hot dog and she became one of YESusa fans. I hope YESusa will continue its service until she participates in the site for herself.
Thank you.

Dear Janice,

The old man is Colonel Sanders. According to KFC company legend, his recipe for fried chicken was famous throughout Kentucky, and he founded KFC to bring southern food to the rest of America.

YESusa plans to continue its service for as long as Koreans around the world need to learn English. Because our site's members include Koreans of all ages, we would be most pleased to welcome your daughter as a member. At the age of 12, she is at a wonderful stage to begin studying English through our web site. Writing skills can be learned almost intuitively at this age, and English would become not a foreign language, but truly a second language for her. As you know, the best way to learn how to express oneself accurately is to write. This is why children are assigned personal journals as writing exercises. Other members in her age group send us short English essays or journal entries with Korean in parentheses after expressions of which they are uncertain. This helps us find the right English expression for them and it also encourages them to be creative with their English writing.

We would also like to introduce õÀç±³À° Á÷¿µ Çعý±³½Ç, our sister organization in Korea. It is the nation's top mathematical institute for children, so you may already know it well.

Sincerely,
YESusa

P.S. Following is an edited version of your email:

Black Feminist Pioneer

Ida B. Wells was a journalist at a time when few women in the United States, especially Black women, had the opportunities to gain education and careers. Although the majority of Black women worked, most labored to earn a living. The few who became professionals became schoolteachers or nurses. But Wells became not only a journalist, but a passionate advocate for the rights of Blacks and an outspoken opponent of the racist lynchings of Black men. Through her activism for Black people, she became one of the first role models of Black feminism.

She was born in Mississippi in 1862, just three years before the American Civil War ended. Her parents were slaves. After slavery was abolished with the victory of the American North in 1865, her father worked as a carpenter. He was active in political movements to improve the lives of the newly freed slaves. Many whites opposed giving Blacks citizenship, and the Ku Klux Klan used terror and violence to maintain white supremacy. Although Blacks were no longer slaves, they were still far oppressed by a system of racial discrimination that privileged whites.

Wells learned from her father's activism that resistance was the only way to obtain full equality for Blacks. She was an eloquent writer, and used her skills to investigate and write about injustices against Blacks. She toured the United States and England giving lectures about the rights of Blacks to full equality. She became famous for her crusade against lynchings, incidents in which mobs of white people hanged Black men. Lynchings were common in many areas of America, and the racist practice did not completely end until after World War II.

Wells died in 1931. Sadly, the racism she fought lives on, for America continues to oppress not only Blacks, but all peoples of color. The struggle against racism did not begin with her, however, and it did not end with her. The spirit of resistance burns brightly, for people of conscience everywhere continue to fight racism every way they know how.

Hello. I'm Woo-chan Seo. Nice to meet you all. I'm a senior in college. I am going to graduate next semester because I came back to school one semester late. I have been in Australia for a year working, studying, traveling, etc. It was a really valuable experience. I came back to Korea this past August. Since then I have been studying English at an institute. I want to have a good command of English. While surfing the Internet, I ran into your site. Well, I'll get right to the point.
..........
I hope you can reply quickly. Take care until next time.
Thank you!

Jazz musicians referred to cities where they were scheduled to perform as "apples." New York was considered the most desirable and also the biggest city in which to perform. Thus the musicians called New York "the Big Apple" and all other cities were called "little apples." The nickname stuck, and New York is now known as the Big Apple around the world.

Of Games and Science

The percentage of women earning computer science degrees has actually declined over the past decade, according to a recently released study. In the United States, the peak was in 1983-84, when women earned 37.1 percent of computer science bachelor's degrees. But in 1993-94 that percentage declined to 28.4 percent. The United States is not alone in this trend. Women used to make up a third of students in information technology and related computer science courses in Great Britain, but now they make up barely five percent.

Why did the numbers of women choosing to study computer science steadily rise and then fall? Part of the answer may lie in computer games. When computer science first became a popular major in the 1970s, computer games were rare. By the late 1980s, however, they were all the rage. And most players were boys. With a few exceptions, computer games were geared toward a male market, emphasizing sports, war, and action adventures featuring heros, not heroines. Experience with these games gave male college students the advantage of familiarity in college computer courses.

Computer professionals also note that gender discrimination is a factor. As computer-related jobs became more lucrative and demanded long hours, companies were more reluctant to hire women. And women became more reluctant to enter a field where they faced such discrimination.

´äº¯: Regardless of verb tense, it is generally preferable to eliminate prepositions altogether and simply add the time element, as in the following examples:
What are you doing this summer?
What did you do this summer?
What have you been doing this past summer?
What have you done this summer?
What will you be doing this summer?

´äº¯: "just around the corner" can only be used to refer to things that are approaching, while "draws to a close" is for things that are ending. In reference to the new year and the end of the year, therefore, the best way to use these expressions are as follows:
The new year is just around the corner.
The year is drawing to a close.

Although it is possible to say "The end of the year is just around the corner," this is very awkward and so it is better to avoid this expression.

A Study On Heat Fluxes In The South Sea Of Korea

Kim, Byung Choon
(Directed by Professor Cho, Yang Ki)

Department of Oceanography
Graduate School of Chonnam National University
Kwangju, Korea

Abstract

The long-term mean (10-year mean) surface heat fluxes over the South Sea of Korea are estimated by the bulk method using the most available meteorological observatory data along the Southern coast of Korea and from the KODC (Korea Oceanographic Data Center).

Applying the Box model, mean sea flow velocity and heat content were calculated. The long-term annual mean net heat flux is about -110W/m-2 (negative sign means that the sea loses heat from the air) with the annual range from 90W/m-2 in June to -327W/m-2 in December. The region with the largest loss of heat is in the Southeast of Cheju Island. This seems to indicate the existence of the Tsushima Warm Current. In that area in winter, the maximum loss of heat is -403W/m-2. The largest insolation occurs in May and the smallest in December. This is due to variation in cloudiness.

The calculated insolation is in good agreement with direct measurements at meteorological observatories. The long-wave radiation has small variations, but it shows a maximum value in winter and a minimum in summer. The upward latent heat flux becomes the largest in December in this area. In June, the latent heat flux and sensible heat flux are the smallest.

The annual variations in heat fluxes in this area are closely related to the SST minus air temperature and the air temperature itself. In February and August, annual variations of heat fluxes are larger than in other months. This is due to variations in marine-meteorological variables.

Assuming that the transport of the Korea Straits is 3.0¡¿106 m3/sec in the Box model, incoming heat content through B3 is about 76% and the other is through B1. Outgoing heat content through B2 is 95% and the other is through the sea surface.
